A Beautiful Splash of Colour

When I'm going through my receptions, one thing that really catches my eye and turns a great photo into a spectacular one (or a decent one to a great one) is the use of uplighting.

Uplighting is when the decorator or DJ sets up lights around the room to shine up onto the walls giving that splash of colour that looks fantastic in photos. In photography speak, I drag the shutter a wee bit to let us much ambient light flood the image, showing off the beautiful colours in the room, before I pop the bride with a little flash, both to gently illuminate her from the background but also to freeze any sort of motion that would occur with a shutter around 1/30 sec. (new photographers, make sure you set your flash to rear-curtain or second-curtain sync)

Here are just a few images that have become that just that little bit more dynamic with the use of uplighting. Now imagine them with dark or blank walls. It's an inexpensive add-on that makes a world of difference, even if they just give a hint of colour!
